Student of the Month

November 2024 - Sophie Ernst

As a dedicated fourth-year student, Sophie exemplifies academic excellence and an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact, which defines Acadia Kinesiology.

Academically, Sophie has consistently demonstrated exceptional performance, earning Dean’s List recognition for three consecutive years and receiving the prestigious Webster Undergraduate Research Award. As an Honours student, Sophie works tirelessly researching the effects of community-based exercise programming on stress and self-efficacy in cardiac populations. This has led to the opportunity for Sophie to attend the National CSEP conference this month in Montreal where she presented her preliminary honours research. Sophie is also co-author of a published abstract in the Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention and has a first-authored abstract publication in Applied Physiology Nutrition and Metabolism. Sophie’s research started through volunteering as a teacher’s assistant with the Acadia Cardiac Maintenance program. Many participants have given feedback about her organization skills, her kindness, and her infectious positive attitude at 7:30 in the morning.

Sophie’s other volunteer work includes being an executive member of Exercise is Medicine @ Acadia, which encourages students to embrace physical activity; working as a S.M.I.L.E. program instructor; and working at the Acadia Women’s Centre. Her involvement in these programs demonstrates her compassion and commitment to inclusivity, advocacy, and community engagement.

Anyone who knows Sophie would agree that her compassion, kindness, and dedication to helping others through research and sharing her skills make her a very deserving Student of the Month!
