Student of the Month

January 2026 - Sophie Vertanness and Isaac Bodnar

Sophie is a fourth-year student who has consistently demonstrated exceptional commitment to both her academic studies and the Acadia community throughout her time at the university. She is deeply passionate about helping and supporting others, a quality she expresses through her extensive volunteer involvement. Sophie has volunteered with the S.M.I.L.E. program for all four years of her degree and has taken on a leadership role within the program for the past three years. She dedicates her time and energy to creating a welcoming, positive environment and is a true role model for other volunteers.

In addition to her volunteer work, Sophie has a strong passion for volleyball and shares this by coaching middle school girls, inspiring them to develop both skill and confidence in the sport. Her involvement extends beyond athletics, as she has actively contributed to building a sense of community at Acadia through classes, intramurals, and volunteer initiatives. This year, Sophie also serves as the Grad Class Life President, where she plays a key role in planning events, coordinating initiatives, and assisting with convocation to ensure a meaningful experience for graduating students.

Sophie is a friendly and approachable presence on campus, known for her kindness, leadership, and willingness to help others. Her ability to balance academic excellence with numerous leadership and volunteer commitments is truly admirable, making her an outstanding candidate for Kinesiology Student of the Month.

Congratulations, Sophie!

Isaac exemplifies what it means to be reliable, compassionate, and deeply engaged in both academic and community life. In every role he takes on, he shows up prepared, dependable, and ready to support those around him.

Academically, his commitment to excellence is clear. As a Teaching Assistant for both Biomechanics and Human Physiology II, he is trusted by faculty and valued by students for his approachability, clarity, and patience. His consistent placement on the Dean’s List and receipt of the Acadia Excellence Scholarship for all four years of his degree reflect his discipline and work ethic.

Isaac holds leadership roles on campus including serving as the Vice President of Events and Treasuries for the Exercise is Medicine Club. Isaac is involved in a virtual pulmonary rehabilitation program, the Valley Regional Cardiac Rehabilitation program, and the Exercise Science & Training Program demonstrating a strong commitment to applied learning and client-centered care. He regularly shadows local Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs) and has been involved with the AWAKE program. Through these experiences he has shown maturity, empathy, and a genuine desire to understand and serve diverse populations.

Isaac is personable, thoughtful, and inclusive, someone others naturally trust and turn to. This has been most evident through his time volunteering in Acadia’s Cardiac Maintenance program. His ability to balance leadership, service, and academic excellence while remaining kind and empathetic truly sets him apart. He is truly deserving of this recognition.

Congratulations, Isaac!
